For Quadri, a new post—but same market solutions

Gabriel Quadri

Gabriel Quadri served for three years as one of Mexico’s top environmental regulators, heading the National Ecology Institute. He left that post in 1997 to become director of the Private Sector Study Center for Sustainable Development, or Cespedes, a nonprofit think-tank supported by the Business Coordinating Council, Mexico’s main business lobby. For Quadri, the move did not amount to a major philosophical leap. While in government he had pushed strongly for market-based environmental strategies. And he has continued that campaign as head of Cespedes, which formulates environmental policy positions for the Business Coordinating Council. Among Quadri’s top priorities currently is to press for changes in Mexican water policy. He also is advocating private-sector management of natural resources and the construction of more toxic-waste disposal sites in Mexico, much as he did while in government. Quadri spoke recently with EcoAméricas correspondent Barbara Belejack at his office in Mexico City. [Log in to read more]
