Collaboration raises hopes for Gulf of California

Six months after a leading U.S. environmental organization criticized Mexico’s government-owned seafood marketing company for promoting destructive fishing in the Gulf of California, the firm has agreed with the green group to collaborate on species protection in the 700-mile-long water body. The accord, reached in a mid-June meeting at San Diego’s Museum of Natural History, involves not only the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) and Mexico’s state-owned Ocean Garden Products, but also representatives of large- and small-scale gulf fishing interests.
