Kathryn Fuller has been a prominent player on the world conservation stage—most recently as head of the World Wildlife Fund, the U.S. branch of the Worldwide Fund for Nature (WWF-US). Her interest in the field began with a trip to Tanzania in 1973. After earning a law degree at the University of Texas, she did graduate studies in environmental science at the University of Maryland and worked for the U.S. Justice Department during the administration of Jimmy Carter. There, her roles included head of the Wildlife and Marine Resources Section. She joined WWF in 1982, heading the wildlife-trade monitoring program and serving as general counsel and executive vice president before becoming president and CEO, a post she held from 1989 until June 2005. A winner of the U.N. Environment Program’s Global 500 Award, she will join the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars in October as a scholar in the environmental change and security program.
