Cleanup, at last, for Argentina’s Riachuelo River?

Argentina’s Supreme Court has ordered a cleanup plan for the Matanza-Riachuelo River, arguably the country’s most dire case of industrial pollution. In a decision issued June 20, the high court said the federal government, the city of Buenos Aires and Buenos Aires province must prepare the blueprint within 30 days. The court also ordered over 40 companies to prepare a technical report detailing the type and quantity of waste they send into the Matanza-Riachuelo. The 40-mile (64-km) river, called the Matanza as it runs through a portion of northern Buenos Aires province and the Riachuelo as it skirts the federal capital to its mouth at the River Plate, suffers from a variety of afflictions.
