Looking to tap growing world food demand, Argentina has unveiled a highly ambitious plan for agricultural expansion through 2020 that has caused environmental concerns not only among green advocates, but also among some in the industry. “I want to tell you that Argentina already is a global leader in food,” said newly reelected President Cristina Kirchner in announcing the plan last month. “But we can get to the point of producing food for 400 million people, which would give us a huge surplus since we only have 40 million inhabitants and a growth rate similar to that of European countries.” Critics counter that Kirchner’s new blueprint, called the Agroalimentary Strategic Plan (PEA), would boost an already steep ecological price Argentina is paying for following an...
