Natura’s green practices not just cosmetic

World cosmetics makers have drawn criticism over the years for allegedly using harmful ingredients and testing their products on animals. But over the past two decades, some in the industry have tried to improve their image by offering products featuring everything from recycled packaging to ingredients that are natural, allergen-screened, non-animal-tested or otherwise more appealing. A Brazilian company, Natura Cosméticos, is having notable success on that score, distinguishing itself from domestic rivals and from many cosmetics companies abroad. Its initiatives range from waste reduction and greenhouse-gas cuts to the incorporation of profit-sharing agreements with rainforest communities supplying the company with sustainably harvested natural ingredients.
