Agrochemical repackaging probed in Brazil

Food-safety authorities have launched regulatory action against two agrochemical makers here, Germany-based BASF and Brazil’s Servatis Agro & Fine Chemicals, drawing a rebuke from four Brazilian trade associations that represent the agrochemical industry. Authorities accused Servatis of illegally repackaging BASF fungicide at BASF’s request. They charged BASF then illegally marketed this fungicide, saying that since the product had expired and had not been adequately tested before its repackaging and sale, it posed a potential health and environmental threat. Reprocessing, repackaging and sale of expired agrochemicals is legal in Brazil provided the products are tested to ensure they will not break down before their new expiration dates.
