Costa Rica eyes next carbon-neutrality steps

Last Sept. 23, Costa Rican President Luis Guillermo Solís took the stage at the United Nations Climate Summit in New York and told the world about his country’s goal to become carbon neutral by the year 2021. “The time for talk is over,” Solís said, with a dramatic fist pump. “The time for action is now.” If successful, Costa Rica would become the world’s first carbon-neutral country, further burnishing its international reputation for environmental foresightedness. At first glance, it would seem Costa Rica is well on its way. In the first quarter of 2015, the country did not burn a drop of fossil fuel to generate electricity.
