If the tariff war between the United States and China continues, it will likely speed deforestation in Brazil, environmental and trade experts say. This knock-on effect could occur, they assert, because China would buy more soy from Brazil, already its leading supplier, as it throttles back on purchases of U.S. soy made more expensive by tariffs. That, in turn, could quicken the pace of Brazilian deforestation as land is cleared for cultivation to meet greater Chinese soy demand, experts say. Not all analysts agree. Even if high tariffs continue, they say, the costs they impose could trigger a world recession, which could cause Chinese demand for Brazilian soy—and, thus, pressure for more soy planting in Brazil—to fall.
